As school starts up again we are given the amazing opportunity to have a fresh start. This fresh start includes that wonderful new dorm room or apartment full of blank white walls just begging us to splash our personalities across them. However decorating is an added expense that can be hard to justify. As those walls sit there, waiting for you to plaster with your creativity, think Smart! This article will give you some cheap ideas to spruce up your room while spending as little to no money at all!
Every year my biggest contribution to my room is the decorations, most important of which is: my quote wall. Every year I collect all the construction paper, sharpies, and crayons I can find around the house and set to work writing my favorite quotes on them. I enlist my roommates for help on choosing the quotes and artistically writing them out, then we spend the afternoon taping them up on the biggest expanse of wall we can find. As we do this we make sure to leave space to add quotes throughout the year. This decoration is not only simple, but also personal. The quotes are a reflection of where you are and the inspiration that you look too. Estimated cost: $0-$3.
Thanks to the brilliance of advancing technology the world now has at their fingertips Pinterest, a virtual addiction full of how to’s and DIY projects. Another idea I love is celebrating where you came from. Google Map your address and print out the map. Cut the map into a heart or another creative shape and put a star on your actual address. Do the same with your roommates. Glue them to sheets of paper and decorate as you please. I put my name and the distance from my home to my home at school. Estimated Cost: $0.10-$2.00 (depending on decoration).
Posters are a must have for dorm and apartment room decorations. What you put on your walls shows every person that visits where your heart lies, but posters can be pricy. Check out these links for places to get posters cheap, but also think about making your own. A lot of places do poster sized prints for $4-$6 depending on the size. Instead of spending your decorating budget posters of Paris, print pictures you took over your summer vacation. Show visitors where you went, as well as your amazing photography skills. I love when people complement a poster in my room and I can say “I actually took that”. Keep the memories of summer and college alive by printing out your own pictures to hang on the wall, or cork board behind your desk. Get creative with them though. Make cool shapes, or spell out words with them. Estimated cost ($.10-$.25 per picture $4-$6 per poster). Poster sites: www.allposters.com www.posterrevolution.com
Another way to get creative is to grab some old Christmas lights (provided they are allowed at your school). String them from the ceiling, in a place that would need a lamp, across the top of the windows, wherever! This is a fun way to have lower lighting, and a decoration! Make the lights an extension of yourself as well. Tube lighting can be manipulated to spell words, and some stores carry colored lights that can really change your room up! Estimated cost: $0
Most of all tailor your room to show who you and your roommates are! Be expressive and creative and look for things that you have at home and can easily upcycle to create a unique and smart living space for your amazing year ahead!
