Make The Most of Your Summer

As the weather continues to heat up and your life starts to cool down, you know it’s definitely summer. ‘Tis the season for relaxing in the sun, splashing in the waves with friends, and finally getting those well-deserved weeks of empty-mindedness after a stress and work-filled school year. I’m guessing most of you Smart Girls, much like myself, can only handle short spurts of such inactivity after having such structure during the school months. That’s where I come in– to help you make the most of the leisure time you have and want, and to help you figure out what to do when you just want to be doing something productive.

Let’s start off with downtime. Summer is the perfect opportunity to spend long hours with friends and family, but also to make new, hopefully lasting connections. Next time you’re at the beach with your girls, strike up a conversation with the girls sitting in the sand next to you. Who knows, you could end up meeting potential future classmates, roommates, coworkers, business partners…the possibilities are endless once you make the initial move as a Smart Girl!

These next few weeks are chock full of opportunities to explore and have new experiences. Rather than go to the beach day after day, head to a local farmers’ market to check out all of the great produce, baked goods, and artisanal products people are selling. Take a trip to that awesome exhibit at the art, science, history, or space museum you’ve been dying to see because you’ll undoubtedly learn something new and beat the sweltering heat. Go on a bike ride around your city or town and try to discover some new fantastic hidden locations for the next fun photo shoot you and your friends have. Try all different kinds of food, especially if it’s seasonal or something you can’t find where you usually shop, and let your inner chef be awakened. Although you definitely have earned those lazy, sun-filled days, there is so much more to experience during the summer months! Take advantage of as many opportunities as you can to try something new and exciting!

Now for those moments when you’re really just feeling like a total Smart Girl. Your friends invite you to the beach for the eighth day in a row and you start looking for a way to gracefully turn them down because, let’s face it, you can only spend so much time laying in the sun without boring yourself to tears. Summer is also a great time to complete projects you didn’t or won’t have time for once school starts up again. Maybe you’ve been dying to learn how to bake the perfect blueberry pie or grill the perfect kabobs. Research and sign up for a cooking class and become the best chef or baker in your social circle. Redecorate and reorganize your room, make over your wardrobe, tackle a DIY project (Pinterest has great ideas- check out ideas from mine here).

Or perhaps you’re looking for something more structured. If you need to complete community service hours for school, summer is a perfect time to do those. Check out organizations where you can work outside doing park clean-up, planting, etc. If you’d rather be inside, local animal shelters, libraries, and churches are almost always looking for volunteers to help with various projects. Not only are these activities great for building resumes, they also can be really fun, too! Speaking of resumes, if you’ve just graduated college and are in the midst of hunting for jobs, summer is a great time to polish your resume and make sure everything that makes you stand out as a Smart Girl is included. If you’re applying for college as I am, summer is perfect for touring schools, creating and refining a list of your schools to apply to, and getting a head-start on essays.

No matter what you do this summer, Smart Girls, make it count. Even though this summer is sadly about half over, it still has the potential to be the best one yet if you take advantage of the opportunities presented to you!
