Oftentimes, Hollywood sexualizes its women and turns them into annoying “damsels in distress.” This summer, though, women are taking to the big screen to finally play developed and relatable characters – not the foolish pin-up dolls we’re used to seeing. Here are a few upcoming summer movies with strong female leads:

Inside Out (PG)

This movie follows young Midwesterner Riley, whose life is turned upside down when her parents tell her that they’re moving to San Francisco. Viewers will get to see all of the emotions this eleven-year-old deals with, some of which are voiced by various Smart Girls like Mindy Kaling and Amy Poehler. Ultimately, Riley learns about adjusting to a new situation and matures greatly. Her journey of growing up is one we can all identify with.

Mad Max: Fury Road (R)

Charlize Theron plays the ultimate fighting woman in Mad Max: Fury Road. Acting as Imperator Furiosa, Theron frees women from sexual slavery, shoots guns, and holds her own in battle. A bit of warning – this movie is excessively violent.

Spy (R)

Melissa McCarthy, always her hilarious self, returns to the big screen with Spy. McCarthy’s character, Susan, is a CIA analyst whose guidance is what gets her agents home. However, when when one of the agents she advises is killed in the field, Susan goes to recover a nuke and avenge her coworker’s death. Directed by Paul Feig, the genius behind Bridesmaids and The Heat, this movie emphasizes the ability of women to do anything men can do, while remaining so, so funny.
