Smart Girls Guide to Self-Love


Coming to a place of complete acceptance and love is something virtually no one has reached. Loving yourself is something increasingly more difficult to do as we are surrounded by and constantly fed images of airbrushed bodies and edited faces.

We are living in an age that is centered around media and social networking. We will always see someone who seems to be smarter, prettier, nicer, skinnier, and happier. Creating the image of the ideal was once reserved solely for magazine covers, billboards, commercials, and television. However, this now being taken to another level as we are now trying to live the fantasy we were fed for so long. What was once only on TV, we are striving to turn into reality, in order to sell the idea of perfection those around us. With photo editing apps and the means to broadcast those retouched images, it is so easy to both create and fall for that illusion. With newsfeeds covered in a picture-perfect social life, body, closet, face, etc. it is no challenge to get lost in what we think we should be.

Just like the next person I have a never ending list of things I want to change (my hairy arms, short legs, sharp cupid’s bow, uneven eyes, etc.) It’s a process not beating myself up for it, learning that these “flaws” do not make me any less of a person, and accepting that these “flaws” aren’t even flaws to begin with.

1. It’s a conscious effort.

We’re constantly bombarded with images of everyone else’s lives and it becomes second nature to compare yourself. It’s even easier to forget how different doesn’t mean worse and how these differences are what make us who we are. It’s important to catch yourself and give yourself a quick pep talk at these times to counter anything that makes you feel less than. Constantly reminding yourself that being different is okay is just one way that I’ve learned to love who I am. It’s not hard to be swept away by what we see, and so it’s necessary to balance that by looking at these images critically, filtering them, and reinforcing positive images to stop the negative ones.

2. Accept who you are.

Probably the most important step towards loving yourself is first accepting who you are. Getting comfortable in your own skin is the hardest part. This is the time where you realize that there is only so much you can change. Acceptance is realizing the limitations, but then not minding because you’ve learned to love what couldn’t be changed and wouldn’t want to change for the world.

3. You aren’t the only one.

Know that you’re not the only person who feels insecure. Personally this is something I struggle with so much, and just recently has started to get better. It’s definitely a change in lifestyle and mindset that takes a lot of time to get used to; however, investing your energy to feel good in your own skin is perhaps one of the best things you can do for yourself.
