Do You Even Lift?



Most of the girls I know have a gym routine that consists of 30 minutes on the elliptical, followed by a few standard crunches, and that’s it.

Although there’s no harm in doing that, there’s a more efficient way to train- weight training!

Yes, I know what you’re thinking- I will get bulky and turn into the Hulk.  Absolutely not! A female’s hormones and genetic make-up cannot build the same type of muscles as a male. So, no worries.

“Lifting” gives you more bang-for-your-caloric-buck than just cardio alone, as well as strengthening you both physically and mentally. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Afterburn: Weight training revs up your metabolism and makes you burn more calories at rest
  • Decreasing Disease: Lifting increases bone density and cardiovascular health, decreasing the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and injury
  • “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.”: Elle Woods knew what she was talking about- the “happy hormones” you gain from lifting will help you de-stress and improve your mood

So, next time you hit the gym, don’t bypass the rack of dumbbells and head straight for the “dreadmill”. Here’s one of my favorite workouts- print it out and bring it with you!

#1 Tip: BE CONFIDENT. I believe that it is true when people say they can smell fear. Keep your head up high, smile, and be happy about what you’re doing. Don’t worry about all the people around you, just focus on yourself. Working out is definitely not a competition, because the true winner is always going to be you.

Being strong & confident is what being a “smart girl” is all about.
